Following Jesus

Salvation is God’s gift to you.

God loves you more than you probably realize. Because of that love, He made a way to rescue you from sin and give you real life, now and forever.

Salvation isn’t something you earn. You don’t level up into it. You don’t prove yourself enough to get it.

It’s a gift.

Ephesians 2:8 says you are saved by grace through faith. That means it’s not about being “good enough.” It’s about trusting what Jesus already did for you through His death and resurrection.

So… how am I saved?

Romans 10:9 breaks it down:

If you believe in your heart and say with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, you will be saved.

Here’s what that looks like:

  • Turning away from your old way of living
  • Repenting (changing your mind and direction)
  • Believing Jesus is who He says He is
  • Choosing to follow Him as Lord

You don’t have to work for it. You just receive it.

Why does following Jesus actually matter?

Because it changes everything.

When you choose Jesus:

  • Your sins are forgiven
  • Your relationship with God is restored
  • Your life gets a new direction and purpose
  • You gain real peace and freedom

2 Corinthians 5:17 says that in Christ, you are a new creation. That means your past doesn’t define you anymore. Shame doesn’t get the final say. You get a fresh start.

And here’s the best part. You now have direct access to God.

Jesus said in John 14:6 that He is the way to the Father. Not one of many ways. The way.

This is just the beginning

Following Jesus isn’t a one-time moment. It’s a lifelong journey of becoming more like Him.

You’re going to have questions like:

  • Why is there sin in the world?
  • Why did Jesus have to die?
  • Why is salvation a gift?

That’s normal. That’s growth.

The way you grow is by getting into God’s Word.

The Bible isn’t just a book. It’s how God speaks to you. It shows you who He is and who you’re called to be.

Psalm 1 says when you build your life on God’s Word, you become like a tree planted by water. Strong. Steady. Growing.

What is Sin

What is sin, really?

Sin isn’t just “doing bad stuff.”

It’s choosing your way over God’s way.

It’s missing the life God designed for you.

Every time we step outside of God’s direction, we step away from His best.

Who is the serpent?

Back in Genesis, the serpent shows up and convinces Eve to question God.

That serpent is Satan.

His strategy hasn’t changed. He still tries to:

  • Deceive
  • Confuse
  • Pull people away from God

But the Bible makes it clear. You don’t have to fall for it. You can resist him and stand strong.

What does sin actually do?

Sin creates distance between us and God.

God is holy. Sin breaks that connection.

And here’s the reality. We couldn’t fix that gap on our own.

But God didn’t leave it that way.

John 3:16 says that because God loved the world so much, He gave His Son so we could have eternal life.

From the beginning, God had a plan to bring us back to Him.

That plan is Jesus.

Why did Jesus have to die?

Romans 6:23 says the result of sin is death.

That means separation from God.

But instead of leaving us there, Jesus stepped in.

He took our place.
He carried our sin.
He paid the price we couldn’t pay.

Isaiah 53:5 says He was pierced and crushed for us so we could have peace and healing.

Jesus took what we deserved so we could receive what we didn’t earn.

Did Jesus really overcome sin?

Yes. Completely.

Jesus lived a perfect life. No sin. No failure.

Then He died… and three days later, He rose again.

That means:

  • Sin is defeated
  • Death is defeated
  • The grave is defeated

Because Jesus lives, you can live free.

Why is salvation a gift?

Because you could never earn it.

No amount of good behavior, church attendance, or trying harder could fix the problem of sin.

That’s why grace exists.

Ephesians 2:8–9 says salvation is a gift, not something you achieve.

Jesus already did the work.

Your part is to believe and receive.

Why is salvation a gift?

God’s love for you is not based on your performance.

You can’t make Him love you more.
You can’t make Him love you less.

When you say yes to Jesus:

  • You become a child of God
  • Your past is forgiven
  • Your future is secure

There is no sin too big for His grace.
No life too broken for Him to restore.

The Word of God

The Bible isn’t just a book

The Bible is alive. It’s powerful. And it’s how God speaks to you.

It wasn’t written from human ideas alone. God chose people to write it, but the Holy Spirit guided every word. That means Scripture carries the authority and truth of God.

2 Timothy 3:16 says all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for your life. It teaches you, corrects you, and helps you grow.

Different writers. One message.
The Bible reveals who God is and His plan for you.

Where it all begins

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1

God created everything, including you, with purpose.

From the start, humanity was designed to live close to God, reflect His goodness, and walk in His authority. But when Adam and Eve chose their own way over God’s way, sin entered the world.

Since that moment, the entire story of the Bible has been about one thing:

God bringing people back to Himself.

How the Word grows you

You grow spiritually when you read the Bible

And you grow even more when you don’t do it alone.

The Word builds you, strengthens you, and keeps you grounded. It helps you become steady, strong, and rooted no matter what life throws at you.

Why We Pray

Pray First

At Church on the Rock, we live by two words: Pray First.

Before decisions.
Before stress.
Before taking action.

We pray.

Why prayer matters

Prayer isn’t just talking. It’s connection.

When you pray:

  • You build a real relationship with God
  • You grow in trust and faith
  • You invite God into your situation

You’re not talking to the ceiling. You’re talking to a God who hears you, cares about you, and responds.

You don’t have to be perfect to pray

There are no levels in prayer.

You don’t need the “right words.
You don’t need a perfect life.

You just need a heart that says, “God, I trust You.”

What prayer does in your life

  • Builds your faith
  • Deepens your relationship with God
  • Brings real change

When you Pray First, you make room for God to move in ways you couldn’t imagine.

Why We Fast

What is fasting?

Fasting is choosing to give something up to focus more on God.

It could be food.
It could be social media.
It could be anything that usually takes your attention.

The goal isn’t to prove something.
The goal is to get closer to God.

Why fasting matters

Fasting helps you:

  • Quiet distractions
  • Break unhealthy patterns
  • Grow spiritually
  • Become more aware of God’s presence

It shifts your focus from what you’re giving up to Who you’re pursuing.

Different ways to fast

  • Liquid fast
  • Partial fast (like the Daniel Fast)
  • Skipping certain meals or foods
  • Social media or entertainment fast

Ask God what’s right for you.

What fasting does in your life

  • Strengthens your spirit
  • Helps you depend on God more
  • Creates space for clarity and breakthrough

How to start a fast

Keep it simple:

  • Ask God why you’re fasting
  • Choose what you’ll fast
  • Make time for prayer and the Word
  • Stay consistent even when it’s hard

Fasting isn’t about perfection. It’s about pursuit.

Sanctification

What happens after salvation?

Salvation is the start. Not the finish.

It’s not about being perfect.
It’s about growing.

How it works

God works in you through the Holy Spirit.

He:

  • Changes how you think
  • Convicts your heart
  • Strengthens your spirit

Your part is to keep choosing Him daily.

What this looks like

You begin to:

  • Turn away from sin
  • Choose God’s way over your own
  • Grow in character and faith

It’s a process. And every step matters.

Habits that help you grow

  • Read your Bible
  • Pray consistently
  • Stay connected to church

These keep you grounded and growing.

Water Baptism

What is water baptism?

Water baptism is your next step after saying yes to Jesus.

It’s a public decision that shows your private commitment.

What it represents

  • Your old life is gone
  • Your new life has begun
  • You belong to Jesus

Going under the water represents leaving your old life.
Coming up represents new life in Christ.

Important to know

  • Baptism doesn’t save you
  • Jesus already did that
  • Baptism is your response of obedience

It’s your way of saying, “I’m following Jesus.”

Communion

Why we take communion

Communion is how we remember what Jesus did for us.

It’s not just tradition. It’s personal.

What it means

The bread represents His body.
The cup represents His blood.

Jesus gave His life so you could have life.

The bigger picture

Communion connects back to Passover, when God rescued His people.

Just like the lamb’s blood brought protection then, Jesus’ sacrifice brings freedom now.

He is the Lamb of God who takes away sin.

Why it matters today

Communion is a moment to:

  • Remember His sacrifice
  • Reflect on His love
  • Be grateful for your salvation

It reminds you that your freedom came at a price, and that price was Jesus.
